Wednesday Regency: French Revolution-Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen

Approved by the National Assembly of France, August 26, 1789 and written by The Marquis de Lafayette, with help from his friend and neighbor, American envoy to France, Thomas Jefferson.

About 6 weeks after the Storming of the Bastille, The National Assembly of France passed their own Declaration.

The representatives of the French people, organized as a National Assembly, believing that the ignorance, neglect, or contempt of the rights of man are the sole cause of public calamities and of the corruption of governments, have determined to set forth in a solemn declaration the natural, unalienable, and sacred rights of man, in order that this declaration, being constantly before all the members of the Social body, shall remind them continually of their rights and duties; in order that the acts of the legislative power, as well as those of the executive power, may be compared at any moment with the objects and purposes of all political institutions and may thus be more respected, and, lastly, in order that the grievances of the citizens, based hereafter upon simple and incontestable principles, shall tend to the maintenance of the constitution and redound to the happiness of all.

Hellfire Club Erotique Box Set #Excerpt 4 from Devil's Pawn

I've released my Hellfire Club series as a box set on April 7 and thought I'd  post a short excerpt from each story before then. This is from Devil's Pawn: A Hellfire Club Erotique.

“While I don’t doubt your skill,” he responded with a sly smile to, no doubt, indicate Trent’s skill in bed. “I’m afraid this mess is entirely too messy.”

Crossing the room in two strides, Trent gripped Graham’s chin firmly and raised it so there could be no doubt as to his meaning. “The messier the better. These sorts of challenges intrigue me.”

His voice was hard—he didn’t want Graham to misunderstand anything he said. Trent couldn’t be certain why. Yes, he was attracted to the Englishman, wanted him again in fact. But they’d barely met and now he’d volunteered to help the man out of whatever caused him to be marked for death.

Trent relaxed and offered an easy smile. He wanted Graham, and intended to have him again. And despite the fact he enjoyed a challenge, this felt more than that. He didn’t want Graham’s body damaged. He’d rather enjoyed that body.

“I’m certain you relish challenges,” Graham said as he dressed. “This isn’t something I’d foist on an enemy much less a lover.”

Trent grabbed his arm to halt his actions. Graham let him, didn’t so much as raise a inquisitive eyebrow at the movement. “I want to help. And you are not in any position to turn down assistance unless…”

He trailed off and released Graham’s arm. He didn’t resume dressing, but watched Trent with eyes that fluctuate between amusement and…interest.

“Unless,” Trent added and stepped back. “You truly want to become acquainted with the hangman’s noose.”

Hellfire Club Erotique Box Set #Excerpt 3 from Aycliff's Vow

I'm releasing my Hellfire Club series as a box set on April 7 and thought I'd  post a short excerpt from each story before then. This is from Aycliff's Vow: A Hellfire Club Erotique.

If he lost control, he doubted he’d ever get it back. He’d not have the wherewithal to discover Dervin, to continue to prove Darton’s innocence. To continue his search for her.
Now he returned to his window and looked over the gardens. Despite the restraint he struggled to maintain, he could hear Elizabeth’s soft laugh, how it turned to gasps of pleasures when they made love. The feel of her skin beneath his fingertips when he touched her, the press of her body against his.
And try as he might, Callum could not block out her cries of release when she climaxed.
Callum didn’t lash out against the window panes but struggled to not drown in the sea of emotion threatening to overwhelm him.
He’d met Elizabeth in Bath and had never enjoyed another’s company as he had hers. Before she left to return to her father’s house in London, Callum had vowed to marry her. He hadn’t much cared what his father thought of the match, but Elizabeth was from a prosperous family, well connected and respected. That had been enough.
Yes, it had been enough, for both his father and Elizabeth’s. The families had aligned well, and the excitement over the impending nuptials had been the talk of the ton. Until that one damnable day. That day lived in his memory as clearly as anything had.
Callum had just finished redressing Elizabeth, and he remembered how they’d laughed over his newfound proficiency with women’s clothing. They’d shared an afternoon of pleasure before Callum had needed to leave to meet with several business interests and review the estate books. The maid had rushed into the room, not even bothering to knock.

Hellfire Club Erotique Box Set #Excerpt 2 from The Masque

I'm releasing my Hellfire Club series as a box set on April 7, 2014 and thought I'd  post a short excerpt from each story before then. This is from The Masque: A Hellfire Club Erotique

The comte had said he’d protect her, and Olivia believed him.

Once in her rooms, she closed the door, shutting out the sounds of pleasure and laughter echoing through the catacombs. Good Lord, she’d found Louise’s body only hours before, she shouldn’t even be thinking about men, handsome or not.

But then no man had ever affected her as Julien and de Courville did. Julien with his handsome virility and de Courville…honestly Olivia had no frame of reference with which to compare the older comte. Handsome, yes, virile, yes, but more than even that, he possessed an air of masculine sexuality that pulled her to him.

Perhaps her environment affected her mind. The openness of sexual pleasure, the secret labyrinths that hid these people from Parisian society; the very fact that Olivia felt anything towards a man, let alone two. She needed time to collect her thoughts, to discover more about this new world she found herself in. To determine what she wanted.

Someone had brought a tray with wine, cheese, breads, and meats. Olivia knew she should eat something but couldn’t bring herself to. Instead, she crossed to where the sack she’d brought with her still lay, seemingly untouched.

Hellfire Club Erotique Box Set #Excerpt 1 from The Escape

I'm releasing my Hellfire Club series as a box set in April and thought I'd  post a short excerpt from each story before then. This is from The Escape: A Hellfire Club Erotique.

On the ride back to the townhouse, Gabrielle chatted with Annette and Margaux. She didn’t think about her brother or his lies. She didn’t think about any of that. If she wanted to continue to fool the sisters, she had to keep up the pretense of this life.

But the moment they dropped her off with promises to see her the next evening for a dinner party, Gabrielle stormed into the house. She was going to murder her lying, scheming brother.

“I take it,” Theodore said the moment the butler closed the door behind her, “your day with the Fortier sisters was pleasant?”

The butler moved as slowly as he could from the room and still look as if he moved. Gabrielle waited until he’d gone from earshot, an excruciating wait, before answering. She started to confront Theodore, demand to know why he lied to her, but stopped herself before uttering a sound.

If she admitted to Theodore she’d seen Eric, he’d barricade up this house tighter than a besieged fort. No, Gabrielle knew why he’d lied—he hated that she had ever been a member of the Hellfire Club, hated that life, the sexual promiscuity, the political alliances made and broken over an evening in bed.

Taking a deep breath, she smiled up at him instead. “Yes, Theodore,” she said pleasantly, “we had a lovely afternoon. And I’ve had news.”

Studying him carefully, she saw the barest flicker of fear cloud his blue eyes. There and gone in an instant. If she hadn’t looked for it, Gabrielle would have missed it.

“What news?” he asked nonchalantly.
“General Fortier is to return within the month.” She smiled at that and hoped her reaction—her forced happiness—at her intended’s return showed clearly. “I’m sure you’ll be glad to finally have me out of this house.”
