@MiaDarien and her new release Written All Over Her, the Adelheid series

About the Author:
Mia Darien is an indie author of speculative fiction, and a New England Yankee transplanted into Alabama clay. No matter her geography, she continues to stubbornly and rebelliously live the life of her choosing along with her family and pets. She doesn’t miss the snow.

What is your story's heat level? How do you approach the sex scenes?
Mia: Well, I try to keep it PG-13 for Adelheid, so there's not really a "heat level" to it. I will have a sex scene (such as it is) coming up in book five, but it will be implied into fade-to-black to keep my rating about that stuff.

How do you maintain activity as a writer when sitting at a desk all day?
Mia: Honestly? I wish I could sit at my desk all day! With an active three year old boy, I'm lucky if I have a chance to sit at my desk uninterrupted for fifteen minutes. So this means "work time" is compacted into the time between the kid's bedtime and mine, which gives me more focus since I know time is short. Even if I snag some time during the day, time is short, and that gives you incentive. So if I have any energy at all, I'm able to maintain activity pretty well, just to beat the clock.

What is it that you loved about the main characters in your story?
Mia: In my current release, "Written All Over Her" (Adelheid #4), I think I loved Nykk's inner strength the best. I focus on that a lot in my main characters, but she had some serious crap to overcome, even as she was coming undone.

What do you feel is your strongest type of writing? Humor? Angst? Confrontation scenes? Action? Sex? Sensuality? Sweet Romance? And why?
Mia: I like to think it's humor, and enough people have said Adelheid is pretty funny so I think I'm not delusional... We hope! Otherwise, I think I do going-crazy-under-pressure angst pretty well.

Are you social media savvy? If so what do you suggest for others? If not, why not?
Mia: Oh, dear, not at all! I'm pretty socially inept, I think, in "real" life and over social media. I'm trying and trying to learn, but I am definitely not there yet.

What are some things from your life or things you have observed that you've infused into your stories?
Mia: I like to think that I infuse everything from life into my stories. I want to make them real, as real as books about vampires and werewolves can be, so I try to take as much inspiration from everything around me as I can.

If you had an unlimited budget, where would you like to visit for story-related research?
Mia: I'd write a story over in the UK just to have an excuse to travel there to research it! Or in Italy, out in the rolling green hills.

Any fun facts about the research for your book?
Mia: Years and years ago, I got these two books--the Werewolf and the Vampire Encyclopedias-- and I've gone back to those a lot over that time! Otherwise, Adelheid doesn't take a lot of research, though I tried to do what I could to learn realistic police procedure for "Written All Over Her" and Norse mythology for "When Forever Died." I also (long ago) had a chat with a biology major friend to figure out what I could about preternatural biology. That was fun. Though vampires ended up ending with the same explanation as they started: it's magic!

Finally, tell us a little about your newest release!
Mia: As I said before, my latest release is "Written All Over Her" and it's the fourth in the Adelheid series. The narrator is Detective Nykk Marlowe. We've met her in all three previous books, briefly, and have seen that she's kind of a distant person with these terrible scars. In book four, we get to learn where they came from, and see how she copes when the past comes back for a visit, and brings dead bodies with it.

Blurb:
One word can change the story of your life forever.

Abduction. Torture. Surrender.

Eleven months from her adolescence have framed thirty-one years of Detective Nykk Marlowe’s life. Despite the trauma of her past, and the unique physical scars it left her with, she’s built a career as a detective for the Adelheid Police Department.

Her personal life might only consist of caring for her sister and a pet rabbit, but she accepts that.

She accepts that she’ll never be able to be like “normal” people, even the supernatural ones. As long as she can keep the past where it belongs, she’s okay.

But when the body of a teenage girl shows up with the same scars that Nykk sees in the mirror every day, her “okay” life gets turned upside down and she’s forced to confront the past she’s been looking away from for sixteen years.

And when it turns out there’s already more than one victim, the pressure’s on to stop the killer before any more girls are tortured, mutilated, and murdered.
