Cheryl Douglas takes us to Nashville

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Cheryl began her professional career as a nutritionist, but her love of books started at an early age. She studied writing for many years before she decided to pursue her passion as a full-time career. After receiving constructive criticism from several well-known authors, Cheryl finally had the confidence to write her first romance novel.

The first book in the Nashville Nights series, Shameless, was a book that had been dwelling in Cheryl’s subconscious for years. For her, the surprise came when the manuscript began taking on a life of it’s own. Characters came to life, secondary characters became more prominent, outlines were forgotten, and a single title evolved into an eight book series, and another eight book spin-off series entitled Nashville Nights, Next Generation.

One word would aptly describe Cheryl: workaholic. She lives and breathes her writing, when she’s sleeping, watching TV, driving, reading… it’s always in the periphery of her mind. Her imagination rarely takes a holiday, even when she escapes to a sandy beach with her husband and son, she’s planning, plotting, outlining, and daydreaming.

Cheryl feels blessed to be able to get up every day and do something she loves. The thousands of fans who have embraced the Nashville Nights have made that possible. She writes for the readers who ask for more, she writes to satisfy the muse residing inside of her, but most of all, she writes because she couldn’t imagine doing anything else with her life. It took her thirty-seven years to decide what she wanted to be when she grew up, but now that she knows, she’s convinced she’s found her purpose.

Prologue
Five Years Earlier

The sexy little waitress stretched to offer her neck as Trey Turner prepared to do another body shot at the urging of his inebriated friends. He licked the salt off her neck as he felt a small hand grip his shoulder.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

He turned to see his wife, Sierra, staring up at him, disgust darkening her bright blue eyes. He heard a few of his friends mutter curses as the crowd broke up and went back to drinking and dancing.

“Baby, I was just havin’ a little fun.” His words slurred and he wondered how many body shots he’d had before Sierra intervened.

The waitress slid her hand down his chest, hooking a finger through his belt loop. “That was fun. How ‘bout we pick up where we left off later?”

Sierra turned away, not waiting for his answer as she began weaving her way through the crowd.

“Sierra, baby, wait,” he called, trying to push his way through the throngs of people before she reached the door. He grabbed her wrist just as she was about to cross the threshold. “Wait. Please, don’t go.”

“It’s over, I’m done with this shit,” she said, trying to shake loose of his grip.

He had more than a foot and a hundred pounds on her. She wasn’t going anywhere until he decided he was ready to let her go, which wouldn’t happen in this lifetime. “What’s that supposed to mean? Where the hell do you think you’re going?”

“Home to pack.”

He felt the room begin to spin out of control. “What did you say?”

“I’m leaving you. Our marriage is over.”

His grip on her wrist tightened. “No, you can’t leave me.”

She pressed a hand to his chest. “It’s been over for a long time. I’m just making it official.”

“We’re not having this conversation out here in front of a hundred people,” he said, pulling her through the horde of friends he’d invited to his private party. He opened the door to the small dressing room usually occupied by the nightly entertainment that performed at Jimmy’s bar. “We’ll have some privacy in here.”

She was finally able to shake free of his tight grip. “I’ve already said everything I have to say to you.”

He gripped her waist. “Don’t do this, Sierra.” He bent to kiss her neck. “I love you, baby. God, I love you so much. I can’t live without you.” He backed her toward the couch as he lowered himself down on top of her.

“You’ve been living without me for the past year, Trey. You’ve spent your days on a tour bus and your nights in a stadium or bar.” Her voice broke. “We lost our baby girl and you don’t seem to care.”

“Don’t say that,” he whispered furiously. “Don’t ever say that I didn’t care about Callie. I loved her, Sierra. It damn near killed me when we lost her.”

She glared at him. “Really? Is that why you boarded that goddamn tour bus a week after her funeral?”

“I’m a musician; it’s what I do.” He knew the excuse was weak. Sierra was right. He’d been trying to run away from his grief and sadness instead of staying at home where he belonged, supporting his wife.

She shook her head, looking defeated. “It’s what you do—it’s who you are. Trey Turner, country music’s award-winning, platinum-selling mega-star. What about my husband? Callie’s father? Where is he?”

He closed his eyes, feeling disgusted with himself for letting her down again. “Baby, I’m sorry. Look, I know I’ve made mistakes, but let me make it up to you, okay?” His hand eased up her shirt to cup her breast.

Her head rolled back and she closed her eyes. “No, we can’t do this. It won’t fix the problem.” Making love to her may not solve all of their problems, but it would buy him some time to figure out a way to convince her to give him and their marriage another chance. “Just relax,” he whispered, licking her neck.

“Hmm, that feels so good.” She wrapped her denim-clad leg around his. “But then you had lots of practice with your girlfriend right before I got here, didn’t you?”

He cursed himself for indulging in the adolescent drinking game and giving his wife reason to question his fidelity yet again. “Sweetheart,” he whispered, flipping the button on her jeans. “You’re the only one I want; you know that.”

She squeezed her eyes shut as she shook her head. “No, I don’t.”

He hated that he had given her reason to doubt herself, to doubt them. “Let me prove it to you, then.”

His tongue traced the soft fullness of her lips until she finally parted for him. He groaned, taking her mouth with a savage intensity. His mind raced; fear warring with panic as he realized this may be the last time they made love, the last time he had the right to touch her.

Wednesday Regency: An Admiral's Death

Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson (Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronté) he actually died in October of 1805 at the Battle of Trafalgar, but January 9, 1806 was the date of his state funeral. Bold, often disregarding his superiors orders, Nelson has become a myth since Trafalgar where he (OK and every other sailor there!) saved Britain from Napoleon. Before the battle, Nelson sent out the famous signal to his fleet 'England expects that every man will do his duty'.

And, of course, there was his affair with Emma Hamilton. Their affair was passionate, scandalous, and legendary.

At one point Nelson, Emma, and Emma's husband all lived together. Hmmm...

When Nelson died, however, she received nothing and eventually died, dissolute, dispirited, and abroad.

His body was preserved in brandy (an interesting use of brandy, but he was a hero after all) and transported back to England where he was given a state funeral.

From Wikipedia on his funeral:
Nelson's body was unloaded from the Victory at the Nore. It was conveyed upriver in Commander Grey's yacht Chatham to Greenwich and placed in a lead coffin, and that in another wooden one, made from the mast of L'Orient which had been salvaged after the Battle of the Nile. He lay in state in the Painted Hall at Greenwich for three days, before being taken upriver aboard a barge, accompanied by Lord Hood, chief mourner Sir Peter Parker, and the Prince of Wales. The Prince of Wales at first announced his intention to attend the funeral as chief mourner, but later attended in a private capacity with his brothers when his father George III reminded him that it was against protocol for the Heir to the Throne to attend the funerals of anyone except members of the Royal Family. The coffin was taken into the Admiralty for the night, attended by Nelson's chaplain, Alexander Scott. The next day, 9 January, a funeral procession consisting of 32 admirals, over a hundred captains, and an escort of 10,000 soldiers took the coffin from the Admiralty to St Paul's Cathedral. After a four-hour service he was interred within a sarcophagus originally carved for Cardinal Wolsey. The sailors charged with folding the flag draping Nelson's coffin and placing it in the grave instead tore it into fragments, with each taking a piece as a memento

#excerpt Cursed Love: A Wicked Demon Story

Chapter One

She should have left by now.
Nikki Kent stared out the window at the just-rising sun and knew it was already far too late to simply vanish without a word. She’d owe explanations, justifications she really didn’t want to make. But more than that, no sense of urgency pushed her out the door; she felt no need to sneak out like a thief, no pounding fear of discovery. Her mind may have screamed at her to leave, to get the hell out now before it was too late.
Her heart knew better. She knew she needed to leave, but had never in her life felt so content in one place.
Though she’d left without a word so many times before, and from so many different places, here was different. Everything about her life now was different. And Nikki liked that. The ranch spread out before her; the vast terrain of open land that had originally beckoned her, still enticed her with its untamed beauty.
The sun back-lighted the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and though she could barely see the cattle or the quarter horse stables in the pre-dawn light, she knew precisely where they sat. She knew where every building, every fence post lay, and loved every inch of the land. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath and envisioned the layout.
Despite the dangers of growing attached to one place, Nikki had found more at the Agua Clara Ranch than just a job. The ranch had needed a vet and Nikki, funds low and tired of moving around, had needed a new place to stay. She’d traveled the country and found work where she could, from the small family farms that dotted the northeast to the wine country in northern California. Nikki had a rhythm to her movements; stay one or two months, three at the absolute most then leave.
As soon as summer arrived she knew she should have left, but she’d never wanted to stay anywhere else as much as she wanted to stay here at Agua Clara. With him.
Hell, she shouldn’t have stayed at the ranch long enough to sleep with the owner, but Cooper Marquez was a hard man to say no to. Cooper attracted her as no one else ever had—his slow, sexy smile, his hard, lean body, those dark eyes that promised her the best sex of her life. Nikki found him impossible to resist. Impossible to ignore her body’s reaction to his stare, those unbelievably dark eyes as they watched her; or his touch, the lightest caress that sent shivers racing along her skin, heating her blood.

Cursed Love: A Wicked Demon Story

I've been editing this story one last time. I know, I finished it in, what, November? But between the holidays, other writing projects, and well, lack of time, it's taken me this long to get back to it.

I really enjoyed writing Nikki and Cooper's story and plan to do at least one, hopefully two more books to chronicle their story. For now, I want to make sure that Nikki's emotion really comes off the page and that Cooper's fear for and protectiveness over her grips the reader.

With luck, Cursed Love will be out in February!

Nikki Kent had spent her life running from the monster inside her. When she found Cooper Marquez's ranch, she knew she found home. Unfortunately, her demons followed her.

Cooper Marquez knew his lover had secrets, but hadn't figured on one quite like this. No matter what she thought, he wasn't going to let her go through anything alone.

Together they go on a journey to discover the secret to her curse. But when Nikki discovers the truth about her demon, will she leave Cooper for his own safety? Or can he convince her that nothing will stand in his way.

This is a paranormal contemporary romance with ancient Native American spirits, drug cartels, and one hot rancher to make it all better. I hope you enjoy it, since this is a departure from much of my other work.

Downton Abbey

It starts tonight! Who else is mega excited?

Shows those fools that claim otherwise that the historical drama isn't dead! Ha, just try to dismiss the sweeping historical romance. Authors from Jane Austen to Georgette to Kristabel Reed *wink* know the appeal of this setting. Who can't imagine themselves the lady of so grand a manner? And, yes, okay, all the drama that goes with it.

Excerpt:

"You’re right about the Indians," he said quietly to Aric. "It’s not far from the most beautiful lake I’ve ever seen. Puts all the lochs in Scotland to shame. But as long as you keep your gun handy, you won’t have any problems."

"I’m sure Aric has better things to do than go sailing to some secluded island with me," Ravyn said softly.

"That’s a fact," Aric agreed.

Damian glanced from Ravyn to Aric and grimaced. "I don’t know what’s wrong between the two of you, and I have no doubt it’s none of my business. However," he paused, stroking his chin thoughtfully, "the way the two of you go on right in front of everyone tends to make it my business. Aric, your temper is usually controlled to a fault, but you’ve spent the last days making all of us walk on eggshells, and you’ve been working like a man possessed. From the look of both of you there has been no sleep at night, nor any peace. Ravyn looks no better. When she arrived ten days ago, she was exhausted from the long trip. She still looks exhausted. The dark shadows under her eyes haven’t faded." Damian finished.

"You’ve been working too hard yourself, Damian. Makes you see things that aren’t there," Aric said, cutting across the other man’s words.

"Hush, both of you. You’re going to wake Amorica," Ravyn said.

"You can all stop worrying. I’m not going to leave Amorica’s side until the child is born. He or she could come at any time. Childbirth is too exhausting and terrifying to take anything for granted. I won’t let Amorica have the babe alone."

"Stop. You’re going to frighten everyone all the more. They know what childbirth is like," Aric said coldly. "Not everyone thinks of having children the same way you do."

"Not everyone," Ravyn agreed with a deadly chill. "Only every woman."

"Ravyn has a point," Damian said abruptly. "God help me, she’s right about the danger. When I think of how women die…" His expression changed as he glanced down at the woman who slept so trustingly in his arms. "Amorica is my life."

"I didn’t mean…" Ravyn whispered, but no one was listening.

New year thoughts

Why are resolutions made during the coldest, darkest month of the year? Alas, I'm not immune to this resolutoin making/life changing thing. But my (not unique) motto is all things in moderation. Slow and steady and all that. Right?

How's everyone doing with their own resolutions? What? Day 1 is easy, Day 2...not so much!

On a separate note, January is:
National Mentoring Month
National Glaucoma Awareness
Cervical Health Awareness Month
National Blood Donor Month
Thyroid Awareness Month
Birth Defects Prevention Month

Each story offers a blend of romance, adventure, suspense, and, where appropriate, a dab of comic relief. No longer content in the shadows of his older brothers and on a quest to find his destiny, Bryce Fraser's chosen path is fraught with danger, passion, and decisions. Can his unspoken love for spirited, beguiling Fallon be triumphant in a time of war and uncertainty, or will they both fall prey to the devious plans of a traitorous laird from a rival clan?

B.J. will award gifts of swag (including a canvas tote bag, a mouse pad, a pen, book thong, bookmark, can cooler, magnet, and key chain -- US/Canada only) to randomly drawn commenters from this tour and her Virtual Book Tour, and a grand prize of one $50 Amazon GC to one randomly drawn commenter from this tour and her Virtual Book Tour.
Excerpt:

Bryce closed the gap between them. She heard his footsteps, felt his warm breath on the back of her neck as he spoke, but didn’t turn around.

“Please dinna be angry with me, Fallon. I could not bear to think you held me any ill will. This is for the best.” He gently touched her shoulder.

“Dinna leave.” She dropped the sack and whipped around to face him, the words escaping before she could stop them. “Why must you go? Why must you risk your life?”

“You know why.” He yanked her against his chest and captured her mouth.

But this time she did not fight his advances. She wrapped her arms around his neck, responding with equal enthusiasm to his kiss. Her lips parted, welcoming the sweep of his tongue. As he deepened the exploration, her knees buckled, and she clung to his tunic as if her life depended on it.

Unshed tears stung her eyes, but she managed to blink them away. This might be the last time they would see each other and she suddenly found herself wanting a memory that would last forever. What she was about to ask was wrong, and could only lead to heartache. While she knew she should fight temptation with her last breath, she was only human.
“Join with me, Bryce,” she whispered against his lips.

Happy New Year, series' goals, and thank you

Since I'm having a party at my house for New Year's Eve I figured I'd write this blog before then. Because I know I'll be in no shape for January 1, 2013 to wish anyone anything unless it's to wish for someone to take the puppy out tomorrow morning. (Any volunteers?)

A happy, healthy, warm, and loving New Year to everyone. Life is what you make it and I hope everyone has positive energy surrounding them this new year. Say it with me now: 2013 is going to be the best year ever! (Ugh, did I just sound like a cheerleader there?)

Thank you to everyone who have made blogging fun, not a chore, and who keep me always thinking about my next story. I enjoy the interaction with my readers and hope you have as well. Keep safe!

Writing wise, I have a lot planned for the upcoming year! A whole lot:
  • I want to finish my Parisian Exposition series-this is a 6 book series, one for every month of the 1889 World's Fair. Book one (Seduction of my Proper Wife) is finished, and book 2 (Wicked Seduction) is so close I know I can finish it in a couple of uninterrupted days. If I can find those uninterrupted days!
  • I have an Edwardian story I want to get back to, the tentatively-titled The Half-Bred Earl.
  • A Wicked Demon Story series--I still have to finish editing book one: Cursed Love. Originally it was to be a Halloween story, but when the idea strikes on September 30 it's not very feasible to publish it on October 31. This trilogy is also a little different, my m/f couple battling ancient demons. I'll post the blurb next week.
  • Book one of The Havenbrook Menage series is flowing beautifully. Forbidden Road is my twist on the small town series so popular. I like the small town romances, but they're often a little too sweet for me! More on this series to come
  • Last but certainly never least, Regency romances. Let's face facts, it's the lack of the death of the Regency! I want to write another trilogy set during this time but haven't quite hit on what yet. I like the idea of the menages there, so much scandalous wickedness hidden in plain sight. We'll see how the year goes.

Also on my 2013 goal list:
  • Take more time for myself
  • Exercise every day. Even when I'm tired. Yes, even then!
  • Spend several weekends this year not writing but out and about, meeting new people and experiencing new things.

What about you? What are your so-called New Year's Resolutions?
